Some of our club members are going to participate in the Mayor’s Cup in New York. After our regular Friday evening time trial on July 2nd, I videoed Derick and Brent, Rob, Karen and Mark (going to Queen Lilli), to help them see their paddle strokes.

By Jean Raas. Power comes primarily from two motions, the twist and the lean, and secondly from the drive of your shoulders. Your arms should not be involved at all except to hold the paddle. In order to keep your arms from trying to help out with the stroke (though you may think they are huge, your biceps and triceps are teeny muscles compared to your lats, lower back and core), you should try and keep both arms straight throughout the stroke until the recovery.

Not only must the stroke rate, set by seat 1 be mached by every paddler in the canoe, but the stroke from, needs to be the same throughut the canoe. Entering and exiting the water at the same time ensures that power distribution remains equal and synchronized throughout the canoe.
